How To Master Keira Knightley's Matte Blue Makeup
Knightley had just gotten off a long flight, so Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee prepped the actress’ skin with a rich moisturizer—Chanel’s forthcoming Hydra Beauty Creme Riche ()—then dabbed the brand’s Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup () only where she needed the coverage and brushed Kanebo’s Sensai Collection Concealer () under her eyes. (Don’t blend quite yet!) “There are a lot of concealer pens out there, but there’s something about this formula that’s the best—it’s very light,” Lee says.
After dabbing the foundation and concealer where needed, Lee “melted” the makeup into Knightley’s skin with a Beauty Blender Sponge (). “Gently feather it into your skin,” she says. “This sponge is great, but don’t use it to apply the foundation; it’s meant for blending, not application!”
Knightley’s flush came courtesy of Chanel’s Le Blush Crème de Chanel () in Cheeky (available in May), lightly blended onto the apples of the actress’ cheeks. (Try Win Some/Rouge Some Crème Blush () by Flower Beauty in the meantime.)
First off, don’t worry about getting the same eye shadow shape as Knightley. “Everyone’s eyes are unique, finding the shape that suits you is about trial and error,” Lee says. She started with Chanel’s Le Crayon Khol Intense Eye Pencil () in Marine, applying it on the actress’ waterline, around her lashes and on her lid. (It may seem weird to apply eyeliner on your lid, but it’ll last longer than shadow!) Once you have the shape you want sketched out in liner, it’s time to blend. Using an inward motion, Lee used Chanel’s Small Eyeshadow Brush #15 () to soften the line. “Squish the liner into your lashline,” Lee says. “You don’t want any gaps.”
Lee warns that navy is a difficult color to work with in powder form, so stick to creamy formulas. (She used Chanel’s Illusion D'Ombre Long Wear Eyeshadow () in Apparition.) “You’ll need two clean brushes,” Lee says. Gently pat the shadow on your lid with one, then use a second clean brush to slowly feather the shadow up and out.
“I didn’t apply any lashes for this look,” Lee says. “If you put false eye lashes on it will take away from the softness that you’ve built and look more vampy.” She used one coat of Chanel’s Inimitable Mascara () in Noir instead.
“I didn’t want to box in the eye with a strong brow,” Lee says. “This looks more modern with a soft, natural brow.” She brushed Knightley’s brows into place with a clean spooly brush, then a tinted gel, and finally a clear gel. She used Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Tinted Brow Gel () in Brunette and Clear.
Lee kept Knightley’s pout and flush in the same color family, another modern touch. She used Chanel’s Le Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour () in Mademoiselle.
You’ll want to keep your skin shine-free for this look, so dust powder anywhere you get oily, as well as under your eyes. Lee used Chanel’s Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder (); try L’Oreal’s True Match Mineral Pressed Powder ().

“Keira’s dress was very pristine, so I wanted to create something that felt a little messy and a little fucked up, with great texture,” hairstylist Adir Abergel told us.
Abergel prepped Knightley’s wet locks with Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray () on her roots and Kusco-Murphy’s () on the length of her hair before rough drying.
Once Knightley‘s locks were dry, Abergel used a 3/4-inch iron (try the Spring Curling Iron () by Hot Tools) to curl small sections all over her head. “It doesn’t matter which direction you go in, just as long as every hair is curled,” he says. He blasted the actress’ roots with Klorane’s Gentle Dry Shampoo () for texture.
Create a part (it shouldn’t be perfect), then twist the two front sections of your hair back. “Twist away from your face and join them together into a messy chignon just below your crown,” Abergel says. Pin in place, then create two more messy buns right below them with the hair on the bottom left and right of your head. Pin in place. “Pull a few pieces out of the front of your hair to frame your face,” Abergal says.
