Maya Angelou Passes Away at the Age of 86
We lost a national treasure this morning when Maya Angelou passed away at her home in Winston-Salem. Perhaps best known as the author ofI Know Why the Caged Bird Singsand a poety, Angelou had a fascinating life that saw her engaging in vast and varied professions and passions.
She was born in Long Beach, California, and grew up in segregated Stamps, Arkansas. Throughout her storied life, Maya did everything from teach music and dance in Ghana to tour the world in the cast ofPorgy and Bessand perform with Alvin Ailey in San Francisco. During the final years of her life, she was a professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University, and it was that experience that led her to describe herself not as a "writer who teaches," but a "teacher who writes."
