Pretty Little Liars Star Lucy Hale Answers 20 Beauty Questions
Cosmopolitan.com sat down with thePretty Little Liars' star and mark. ambassador Lucy Hale to talk all things hair and makeup — and why she isn't the brow icon of our day, because girl's got #ArchGoals.
Between your short and long hair, which look do you like better?
I can't even remember having long hair now. I mean, I miss having it to braid and do fun things with — now I can barely fit it in a ponytail. Short hair definitely suits me.
Which do you feel sexier with?
Definitely short hair, which a lot of people would think the opposite, like "long, flowing locks," but I feel edgier. I feel more grown-up with it.
Biggest beauty regret?
Over-plucking my brows.
But you've had super thick, cool brows for so long. Does it bother you that Cara Delevingne gets all the credit?
I know, she is taking my spotlight from me! [Laughs.] No, no, she has great brows and so does Lilly Collins.
So you didn't always have great brows?
I was always the little girl with a unibrow. And then I went through a brow evolution of different looks. Now I don't really do anything to them. Because I've had horror stories where either I over-plucked them, or finally they grew back out and I let someone touch them, and it was a disaster. So I vowed to never let anyone touch them again. And it's been a couple of years now and I've finally found the shape that worked for me, so all I do is fill them in a little bit. Long live the big brow!
How has your beauty look evolved otherwise?
I'm into doing a bold lip now — I really like Avon's "Vixen" shade. I used to be, like, purely about the eyes. I wanted liner on my top lash line, a heavy, heavy smoky eye, and lashes, lashes, lashes. But now I don't even wear liner anymore, thanks to my makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan, who broke me of it and made me go outside of my comfort zone.
Your character Aria's look has changed too. How would you describe her evolution?
It's a lot more toned down. Aria was always the one that was very glamorous. I'm like, "You're young, going through turmoil, and you've got like lashes on, like what are you doing?!" But it's a lot more natural on the show now, which I like.
What's the one product you won't go out of the house without?
Literally my beauty routine when I don't have to do anything consists of concealer where I need it, mascara, and lip balm. I also use this stuff Kelsey introduced to me, it's a salve, called Papaw, it's from Australia.
Do you consider yourself low-maintenance?
I'm always getting made up, don't get me wrong, I love getting pampered, but I'm not a fan of spending hours getting ready in the morning. I used to like it when I was in school — I would wake up an hour and a half before and do my hair and do my makeup, but not now. I never believed when people said, "Less is more," and, "When you get older you wont care as much." I was like, "Yeah, OK." But I'm finally at that point where I'm like, "You're right!" So my normal beauty routine is very low-maintenance, which is nice.
What's your favorite hair color you've had?
What's your desert island one product?
That Papaw cream.
Is there one thing that you can do really well when putting on your own makeup?
I can cover a zit like no other. I use a liquid eyeliner brush and I just dip it in the concealer because I'm OCD, I want no spots. And then I just dip the same brush in powder and to set it. Good to go.
What's your favorite concealer for this technique?
I like Clé de Peau a lot. Mainly because it's my exact skin tone. Its hard to find one.
What's the lipstick shade you feel most confident in?
"Vixen" [below in the center], which is one of Avon's shades. It's more interesting than your standard red lip. And not many people wear it. And as I've gotten older I like to do things that not as many people try.
Do you have a beauty indulgence?
I am pretty loyal to my facialist who I go to in Beverly Hills. I've tried all the different kinds of facial products and I've got really sensitive skin. Plus, I'm acne prone and have struggled with my skin, so I have to keep it pretty basic. But the one thing I have to be consistent about is a facial every two weeks.
Your skin is gorgeous what do you do to keep it clear?
What haven't I done? Like I said, facials. I'm also a big fan of Dr. Lancer's products. He scares me personally. He's just a straight shooter. He's like, "You need this, you need this, you need this," and I'm like, "Oh my god." He has an acne line that I love and I use his toner, face wash, and lotion.
What's your best beauty advice?
I don't think young girls are told enough that what makes you different is what makes you cool. I didn't really feel that way when I was younger and had big eyebrows and braces, but that's unconventionally beautiful. And I wish girls could embrace their quirks a little more, because I've always thought that the stranger-looking people are the most beautiful, and most confident. Plus, I think it would be boring if we all looked the same.
If you could try any beauty look what would you do?
I almost did this but I couldn't: I wanted to dye my hair a crazy color. I was going to do blue. Like, jean color. But Rihanna just did it … so now I cant. I've always wanted to do that.
Do you have a beauty icon?
I'm into old-school Elizabeth Taylor right now. I think she's so gorgeous. I love the classics: Bridget Bardot, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn.
What's your worst beauty horror story?
Worst? Oh, I have one! I had just moved out to L.A. and I was doing a photo shoot for someone and a makeup artist accidently put nail polish on my lips because he thought it was lip gloss, since it was in a similar case to the nail polish. Luckily we got it off in time. I was like, "This burns. Does this have pumper in it? Why is this burning so bad?" And then no one said anything and I looked at the package and sure enough it was nail polish. It was bad, but luckily I got it off before it dried.
