SIDS: What Every Parent Should Know | Children's National Health System

Ways to Avoid SIDS

Oct 23, 2009

Last night I went to a benefit for First Candle, an organization dedicated to preventing stillborn and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) deaths through research, awareness, and support. Of course that's a mission anyone can get behind, and I was especially interested because SIDS is the latest of my (more-or-less) irrational fears related to my little 5-month-old son, Connor. (Previous basically-unfounded fears included that he would be diagnosed with anencephaly in the womb, or be born with missing tear ducts and way too many or way too few toes; happily, and luckily, he dodged all of those potential complications.)

There are a number of modifiable risk factors associated with SIDS. The ones below are from firstcandle.org.

  • Stomach and side sleep positions
  • Soft or loose bedding
  • Inappropriate sleep environments
  • Bed sharing
  • Overheating
  • Secondhand smoke
  • Maternal alcohol and illegal drug use

I've been paying close attention to all of them. Connor sleeps on his back only. We don't leave blankets or stuffed animals or other toys in his crib. In fact, sometimes I'll toss a damp bib or worn-but-clean pajama over the side of his crib to air out for a bit, but when he goes down for a nap or to bed at night, I yank that article of clothing off the crib and put it on his dresser. I'm afraid that in his sleep he might toss and turn or flail his arms and somehow grab the bib or jammies and end up with them smothering his face. (Better safe than sorry.) And as the weather turns cool in the Northeast, Rich and I have been trying to figure out the perfect temperature setting for nightime in our house. 64 degrees is too cool — Connor wakes up with little iceberg fingers. But we tried 68 last night, and I was super hot — and I wasn't even wearing a fleecy footie-pj like he was. We don't share a bed, we keep him away from secondhand smoke, and I don't use illegal drugs. So, we do all we can — and, as I am learning is always the case with parenting, we hope it is enough.
